Dachshunds originated from the country Germany, back in the 1800s. They were bred down from Standard size dachshunds to take on smaller prey like rabbits.
The name Dachshund comes from the German language meaning Badger Hound.
With three coats varieties(smooth, wire, and long), they were each bred for different hunting environments. Long-Hairs were more commonly used in colder, brushier habits. The long coat acts as an insulator against cold and a protective layer against any brush. Now days, dachshunds are more commonly kept as house pets for companion purposes, with some families still pursuing them for their original purpose. Their devotion to their families makes them wonderful companions- if you can deal with a little stubbornness. Although dachshunds have been selectively bred for less working drive through many years, dachshunds will still act like dachshunds. They are hounds and do bark frequently and love to dig up holes in the yard. They may also not be the best choice if you have other small animals in your home such as rabbits, birds or any other small pets because of their natural prey drive.
They can do well with children if properly introduced at a young age.
Dachshunds can do well in many different homes. This is why we temperament test. Some puppies can be more laid back, where as others have natural born drive.
We do prefer homes with fenced yards, but will not deny a family just because they don’t have a fenced yard. Let us know on your application how you plan to keep your dog active and fulfilled. We recommend 1-2 hrs of outdoor activity for your dachshund daily such as walking, sniffing, fetch, playing in the yard, puzzle toys, flirt pole, interacting and playing with other dog/s.
Dachshunds are known for being stubborn and hard to house train. We find that crate training can be a huge aid in setting potty boundaries with your puppy. We recommend crate training to all families.
We don’t recommend dachshunds to homes with lots of stairs, although arrangements can be made to accommodate them. Please do research on IVDD.
We recommend dachshunds to active families, but occasionally we have puppies that are more laid back and will do well with less active families.
Daily walks, and mental stimulation is enough to keep a dachshund fulfilled.
Our dachshunds are always up to the next adventure and very willing to do anything with their person. Despite the reputation dachshunds get online for being couch potatoes, they love being outdoors and being active members of the family.
